Functional Programming: A Gentle Introduction by Frederick Polgardy

Functional Programming seems to be all the rage, but what is it? Do I need to have a Ph.D. in mathematics or computer science to understand it? Do I need to learn Erlang or Lisp or Haskell to use it? In this presentation, we'll talk about:

  • The history and philosophy of FP and functional languages
  • Fundamental concepts and "patterns" of FP
  • Pure and impure functional languages
  • How FP differs from other programming paradigms
  • How non-functional languages have hijacked FP concepts

When: Thursday, September 25, 6:00-7:30
Where: Obtiva, 566 W. Adams St., Suite 400, Chicago, IL
Eating: Giordano's Pizza
